If you’re a regular visitor to charmingman.com, you’ll have noticed a few changes over the past month. As outlined in my latest Charming Man newsletter, I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching recently, as well as keeping my head down writing Final Encounters, I promise!
It’s almost six months since the release of First Encounters, the compilation of my first six short sensual romance stories, and without exception, everyone who has taken the trouble to get in touch with me or has taken the time to post a review on either Amazon or Goodreads has had nothing but praise for it. OK, the optimist in me says that’s fantastic; I just need to get another couple of million on board, and I’ll be home and dry! However, the pessimist in me says that means the vast majority who haven’t bothered to get in touch didn’t enjoy it. But in reality, I think it safe to say that not that many people have read it!
I’m encouraged by all the good words said to me, and I’d like to think people know me well enough by now. I don’t like to blow my own trumpet, it’s just not in me to tweet, post, pin, whatever that my book will be the best thing you read this year; that’s it’s an Amazon 5 star number one best seller when it’s not. And as a result, maybe I’ve got nothing but myself to blame for its lacklustre sales figures.
I recently sought advice from a marketing guru, who took a read of First Encounters, and analysed my presence on social media, website footprint and current marketing activities. He basically dissected the whole Charming Man brand that I’ve endeavoured to create over the last couple of years. It was a bold move on my part; I just needed to know where I was going wrong. And let me be upfront here and say, if it’d transpired that my writing wasn’t up to it, I would’ve taken it on the chin and gracefully retired.
However, I was told unequivocally that I possess a “tremendous talent for evocative story-telling”, which I’m more than happy to accept as a compliment!
However, (however)… I was also told that my book covers leave a lot to be desired, my CM logo (the naked white lady with a red hat) did nothing to attract the readers I should be targeting (predominantly women) and even my name (Charming Man) could be perceived as that of an ageing porn star! Ha ha, do any of you agree?!
To round matters off, I was told I have no real marketing strategy in place, despite trying to be active on both Facebook and Twitter. With hindsight, it would seem I’ve been under the illusion that the quality of First Encounters should, in itself, be sufficient for it to be “discovered”, which of course is nonsense.
Needless to say, I’ve been addressing as many of these issues as I can, and the results are here to see. I hope you approve of the new direction Charming Man is heading; do please let me know!
Regarding book covers, I’ve always believed that my words should do the talking, and that overly provocative book covers were unnecessary. I now realise the error of my ways, and in this respect I’m upping my sensual game! I’ve commissioned new covers for both First Encounters and Final Encounters, and these will be revealed soon! And the covers to each individual story within each compilation have been treated to a makeover too. Again, I hope you approve of what I’ve come up with so far.
Re-Launch Blitz Party!
I’ll be re-launching First Encounters in September, rebranded with new cover(s) and a small number of edits, and I’ll be coordinating this release with a full marketing campaign, the details of which will follow over the coming month. To all bloggers and book reviewers who would like to get involved with this re-launch, I welcome you with open arms; please complete the Re-launch Blitz Form and I will be in touch in due course.
If the re-launch goes well, it’ll hopefully provide the best possible launch for Final Encounters towards the end of the year.
After waiting some time for something to happen to my writing career, I now feel strangely energised. Following this marketing analysis, I believe in my writing more than ever before. A big thank you to all those who have supported me these past three years; with your help and support I know I can take Charming Man to the next level.
A S Wilkins (aka Charming Man - ageing porn star!)
